2010 Medigap Changes
Changes in 2010 Medicare Supplement Plans Could Affect Millions
|
There
are several changes coming to the current standardized Medigap
(Medicare Supplement) insurance policies in 2010, changes that will
affect future coverage options and premiums. These changes will apply
to all companies offering Medicare supplement insurance policies.
The coming changes were brought on by the Medicare Prescription Drug
Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA), in which the National
Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) was asked to modernize
review the current Medigap plan coverage. The idea was for the NAIC to
determine if changes needed to be made to the standardize plan benefits
to reflect changes that have occurred in the marketplace since the
standardization of Medicare Supplement plans in 1990.
Upon completion of the review, the NAIC recommended several changes
which have since been approved and will go into effect on June 1,
2010. The primary changes are listed below:
Two New Medigap Plans To Be Added: Two new Medigap
options will now be available - plan letters M and N. These plans will
introduce additional cost-sharing for Medicare recipients, such as
co-pays, and small coinsurance exposure in exchange for slightly lower
premiums than the traditional plans.
Three Medigap Benefits Will Be Changed or Eliminated:
The commission concluded that the "excess charges" benefit should
be changed to only offer 100% coverage, and suggested the removal of
two other benefits cut due to the coverage being historically
underutilized and inconvenient to use. As a result, the "preventative
care not otherwise covered" and "at home recovery" benefits will no
longer be offered with new Medigap plans sold after June 1, 2010.
As a result of these changes, four current Medigap plan designs - E, H, I and J - will no longer be available. If a Medicare Supplement
recipient is currently using one of these plans they will be allowed to
keep it, however these plans just will not be sold after June 1, 2010.
With these four plans not being offered after June, most advisors
are recommending their clients avoid these policies. Since no new
clients will be able to purchas plans E, H, I or J, those that remain
on these plans could well find themselves facing large rate increases
in two to three years as the claims cost for those covered by these old
plans will continue to raise over time. Given this fact, it makes the
most sense to obtain coverage with a Medicare Supplement insurance plan that will still be available for purchase in future years, such as the popular Medicare supplement plan F.

Code Blue Call your Congressmen to Tell Them You Want Health Reform Done Right!
|
As you know, Congress is back in session and the healthcare
debate still remains center stage. Last week President Obama spoke
before a joint session of Congress to state his ideas for comprehensive
health care reform. While America and Congress remain divided on many
issues of reform, it is now more important than ever that congressmen
hear from their constituents.
This week we are asking everyone to pick up the phone
and call their Senators and Representatives to let them know that you
want meaningful health care reform done RIGHT.
There are many ideas out there today about how to reform America's
health care system, and you need to let your representative know that
while you cannot support ideas that you feel will do more harm than
good for America, you can support ideas and methods that will help
contain the skyrocketing costs of health care coverage and policies
that will open the door to private health care coverage to millions of
Americans.
Health care reform is a heavy burden but it is what America needs.
We need to let Congress know that we support health care reform to make
coverage affordable and accessible to all Americans, but in order to
achieve this we must work across party lines and find consensus.
Comprehensive health care reform will no doubt impact every American
and it is important that Congress get health reform right.

CoverageFirst
Engage your clients' employees to become better consumers.
| CoverageFirst is a health plan that combines coverage for basic
healthcare with protection for a major unexpected illness or injury.
CoverageFirst
works differently from other plans. It pays your clients expenses up front
while encouraging them to make good financial decisions about their
healthcare. Instead of meeting a deductible right away, clients get a $500
allowance that pays for their basic healthcare services. For many
people, that's all they need in a year. Here's how it works:
CoverageFirst pays their first $500 of healthcare costs
- except for their copayments - before they start paying toward a
deductible, as long as the costs are for covered services from
in-network providers.
Once the allowance is spent, clients have a deductible to meet.
After they meet the deductible, the client and Humana share in the cost of most additional eligible medical
expenses until they've met an annual out-of-pocket maximum amount.
Clients pay only a copayment for preventive care office visits,
even after the $500 is gone; copayments don't count toward the
deductible or out-of-pocket maximum, and clients can't use the $500
allowance to cover copayments.
The plan includes a "safety net" - an out-of-pocket maximum to limit clients' costs in case of a serious illness or injury. Premiums are generally lower than those of many other plans.
An extra incentive for you to discuss CoverageFirst with your small-business clients: You can earn a one-time bonus of $25 for each enrolled employee in 2-99 groups in CoverageFirst plans placed with effective dates between August 1st thru October 31st 2009. This applies to new business only.

"BEET" The Competition
Boost Stamina. Better Performance
|
Whether
you're a serious athlete -- or simply looking to make workouts easier
-- new research suggests beets might boost your stamina. British scientists
tested several male subjects on exercise-bike performance after
drinking two cups of beet juice. Beets improved endurance, enabling the
bikers to cycle a minute and a half longer at high intensity.
Why? It
seems the body converts beet nitrates to nitric oxide, which facilitates blood flow improving aerobic efficiency by nearly 20%.
Previous research had demonstrated beet benefits for the heart --
both in terms of lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Specifically,
the beet antioxidant betanin helps check LDL "bad" cholesterol. Beets also contain folate and manganese, with a mere 37 calories per half cup.
What else to eat for your workout routine? Raisins deliver superior nutrition and equivalent energy compared to expensive sports gels. Pineapple and cherries contain compounds that help maintain healthy joints. Bananas can help you avoid muscle cramps.
