The Patient Protection and Affordable
Care Act
     Action Alert
The national debate over comprehensive health reform has reached a critical point.  H.R. 3590 represents the furthest-reaching piece of health care reform legislation adopted since the creation of the Medicare program over 40 years ago.  Your U.S. Senators will be will be deciding what amendments to make to in the weeks ahead, and the changes they make will determine whether the Senate leads the nation toward health care reform done the right way or the wrong way.

There is no more critical time to let your Senators know what you think about the Senate bill than right now.  Our current health care system is in need of reform and to control rising health care costs and provide coverage options for all Americans. However, sustainable and workable health reform is a significant and complex endeavor; this bill will impact the economy as a whole and the lives of every American.   Some of our concerns with H.R. 3590 as it is currently written that we need to communicate to our Senators include:
  • The bill does not do nearly enough to address the underlying costs of medical care, the real driver of rising health insurance premiums.

  • As currently written, the Senate bill significantly increases taxes on health plans, employers and others that will further drive up costs, cause employers to reduce benefits and negatively impact jobs.

  • The weak individual responsibility provisions in the bill coupled with requirements that insurers accept everyone regardless of preexisting conditions will also raise costs for everyone. Experience has shown that if healthy people can wait to purchase coverage until they need it, many people will make that rational choice. But that also means that the cost of coverage rises significantly for those who are sick.

  • The government-run public plan option and the significant expansion of Medicaid in the bill will cost a huge cost-shift to privately insured Americans.

  • Numerous reforms in the bill will make it impossible for most Americans to keep the coverage the currently have and like, and will make the cost of private health insurance coverage significantly more expensive for many individuals and employers.

  • The bill will cut benefits for millions of American seniors, who are happily and privately insured now under the Medicare Advantage program.
  • The measure creates a huge new federal long-term care program that is not adequately financed that will be a financial albatross for our nation once it is fully implemented.

Instead of H.R. 3590 as its currently written, please encourage your Senators to take their time and fix this bill so that it regains a strong focus on affordability and bending the medical care cost curve.  We do not need a public option, mandates for employers to provide coverage or a new nationalized long-term care program.  We need sensible reforms that will reduce the cost of medical care and focus on the helping chronically uninsured and truly low-income access coverage, so that we do not drive up the cost of private insurance for everyone else as we seek to cover more Americans.

Please contact your Senator, either by phone or by email on these critical issues today!

Social Media Outlets
Facebook, Twitter, Blogs
AmericanCommunityLogo

Social media outlets are a new marketing channel that insurers need to take advantage of, even though marketers are struggling to find out how best to leverage the new services in their favor, according to Mintel Corporation.

Daniel Hayes, vice president of insurance services at Mintel, a provider of market intelligence, said during a webinar recently that there ere are so many social media sites that are popping up so quickly, even the people who start them have trouble understanding how they will ultimately be used.

Companies hold back on establishing a presence on these sites, Mr. Hayes said, because "the benefit of using social media is not clear." The social media environment, he said, is constantly changing. He also advised that the sheer amount of social networking sites could make it difficult to determine where to establish a presence

What's Next for Health Care Reform
Presidential Health care Summit

  AmericanCommunityLogo

The clearest message of last week's presidential health care summit may be just how intractable the differences are between Republicans and Democrats.

And that clarity may end up moving health care reform forward by convincing Democrats to push ahead without GOP support. President Obama will address the issue later in the week, and congressional leaders are meeting to work out the details.

Reconciliation may be used

But in the wake of Thursday's summit of nearly seven hours between Obama and lawmakers of both parties, health care experts believe it's likely Democrats will use a parliamentary maneuver called reconciliation to push the bill without GOP support.

"Some things got crystallized," says Nancy-Ann DeParle, the top White House health care adviser. "Families and businesses are being crushed by rising costs ... and by the practices of insurance companies."

Differences emerge

But DeParle says the summit also laid bare stark differences between Republicans and Democrats on issues such as how far to go in covering people who have no insurance. Republicans said at the summit that Americans cannot afford the Democratic measure and don't support it. The GOP's main plan would extend health care coverage to only 3 million uninsured people; the Democratic plan would cover 31 million uninsured Americans, DeParle says.

"It's kind of hard to see how you bridge those two things," she adds. "It may be a fundamental disagreement between us."

Another major divide is over what to do next. Republicans want to start over. Democrats say action is needed now and want to continue working with their plan.

Tips to Keep Your Online Browsing
Safe & Secure
AmericanCommunityLogoChances are you have had more than your share of virus threats this year, and can't bear any more. Fed up with annoyances and programs that do nothing other than monitoring your activities and causing harm? Here are some tips and habits you can adopt to keep your computer and your valuable data secure

Put your Antivirus to good use

Do you find lazy to fire up your antivirus software and get your computer scanned, just because it takes too much time? I usually don't like to do this because the anti virus tool steals focus (not all, but some). So I always find myself reluctant to to scan files using AVs. This time around, I've decided to schedule scanning when the computer is idle, when I'm away. No more need to wait patiently for scanning to complete.

Then comes updating. Make sure you set your antivirus to check for updates everyday. If you're AV doesn't provide a real time scanning feature, make sure you get one.

Because prevention is better than cure, it's always better if your antivirus scans web traffic real time and stops viruses and malware if they intrude into your PC.

And having an antivirus isn't just enough. Get an anti spyware too.

Get a Firewall Program

Firewall isn't needed you think? Think again. Get your PC a firewall software, like the Kerio Firewall or Comodo PRO Firewall or even Zone Alarm. You'll have a lot of control over what's happening on your own PC. You'll find programs that connect to the internet without your knowledge.

It may seem annoying at first with lots of warnings and stuff from the Firewall. But, at the end of the day, it does good to your PC. Feel safe, get a firewall now!

Download from trusted sources

Sure there's a hell lot of places where you can download programs from on the internet. But most of these places contain crappy programs and are pages literally stuffed with ads.

Make sure that you download the program from the official site itself, or a mirror that's listed on the official site of the manufacturer.

Very so often, people find themselves downloading programs from untrusted sources, and this leads to virus infections.

Just make sure that you always download files from trusted sources, and for that extra security, scan your downloaded files using your antivirus tool.

Beware when you're installing programs

If a program asks you to install something like a toolbar or any little program, OPT OUT. You don't want to compromise on your security for a freeware program, do you?

Most of the time, you permit the software to install junk on your PC. "Me?", you're asking? Yes, you. But how? Just by skimming through the EULA (License Agreement), agreeing to it, thereby permitting the software to install what you really didn't want to, on your PC.

So here's a nifty little tool called EULAlyezer to hep you. Just copy and paste the EULA from anywhere to this tool, and it will warn you about potential spyware installations by analysing the license text.

If the program policies don't permit you to use it without the bells it comes with, just go search for an alternative. There are scores of them on the web.

Be alert when you're browsing

Yes, keep watching. Check your status bar before you click on a link. The link may not always be pointing to where it seems to lead to.

Make sure you're on secure mode when you're transacting money. Look for https:// URLs. Also keep an eye on the padlock symbol at the bottom of your browser.

Don't fall prey to phishing scams. Dismiss those victorious messages that glorify you by telling that you've won a lottery. They're just spam.

All these can help you have a more secure online life than ever before. Enjoy the new year, safe and secure!
